Posted: 06 Apr 2011 12:58 PM PDT The Christian Science Monitor - Many Americans may remember the Rev. Al Sharpton for his confrontational marches and his booming oratory, demanding â" yes, demanding â" corrective action for a perceived injustice. |
No Joke: Donald Trump's a Leading GOP Presidential Contender (The Atlantic Wire) Posted: 06 Apr 2011 03:39 PM PDT The Atlantic Wire - The reason Trump continues to be thought of as a joke (other than that he's conveniently timed his decision to when it would best help the ratings of his NBC reality show The Apprentice) is that he's riding a wave of skepticism about Obama's citizenship--a position a wide swath of people from New York Times editor Bill Keller to soon-to-be ex-Fox News personality Glenn Beck thinks is patently insane. |
Convictions in the Abramoff corruption probe (AP) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:10 PM PDT AP - Lawmakers, lobbyists, Bush administration officials, congressional staffers and others caught up in the Jack Abramoff public corruption probe: |
Wisconsin Supreme Court Election Results Already a Big Defeat for Budget (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:52 PM PDT ContributorNetwork - COMMENTARY | Wisconsin hasn't voted out a Supreme Court justice since 1967, and this election wasn't supposed to be any different months ago. If the vote was held before Gov. Scott Walker's budget was first proposed, the results would have had Justice David Prosser win handily over challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg. But instead, Kloppenburg's comeback shows how unions and activists may have already won, regardless of whether Prosser takes the recount. |
Anti-EPA Bill Fails in Senate; House to Vote Thursday (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:29 PM PDT ContributorNetwork - After gaining momentum in the House of Representatives, the GOP's proposed amendment that would strip the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of its greenhouse gas regulating powers under the Clean Air Act has failed in the Senate. Democratic senators, along with one lone Republican, banded together this past Wednesday and rejected the proposal with a 50-50 vote, with the proposal ultimately failing to get the two-thirds needed to pass. |
Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:29 PM PDT ContributorNetwork - South Carolinians are watching the budget debate in Congress with apprehension because a shutdown of the federal government will impact South Carolina in several ways. |
Wis. corrects vote count, gives incumbent big lead (AP) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:34 PM PDT AP - A conservative incumbent surged to a commanding lead in Wisconsin's hotly contested Supreme Court election Thursday, after a predominantly GOP county's clerk announced she had incorrectly entered vote totals in the race seen as a referendum on Republican Gov. Scott Walker's divisive union rights law. |
Obama, Congress push for final budget deal (Reuters) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:30 PM PDT |
Obama, Congress leaders start U.S. budget meeting (Reuters) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:25 PM PDT Reuters - President Barack Obama has begun a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House to discuss ways to avoid a government shutdown at the end of this week, according to congressional aides. |
Ballot find threatens to upend Wisconsin election (Reuters) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:23 PM PDT Reuters - Officials in Waukesha County on Thursday said a final review of paperwork and records from a closely watched Wisconsin Supreme Court election uncovered thousands of uncounted votes, a potentially stunning development that could upend the contest. |
Arizona board approves steep tuition hikes (AP) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:23 PM PDT AP - Despite recent student protests, regents for Arizona's public universities voted Thursday to dramatically hike tuition, but also will offer rebates to some students to help ease the financial strain. |
Prosser gains lead over Kloppenburg as vote tallies adjusted (Daily Caller) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:11 PM PDT Daily Caller - In a surprising turn of events, Wisconsin's Supreme Court election may not be as close as previously expected. Incumbent Justice David Prosser has gained a substantial number of votes as counties make vote count adjustments. |
Ivory Coast's Gbagbo Reiterates Refusal to Surrender (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:29 PM PDT ContributorNetwork - Although both French and United Nations officials reported on Tuesday that Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo, who has refused to relinquish his position of power despite losing official elections held in his country last November, had both called for a cease-fire and agreed to negotiate his surrender, Gbagbo is claiming that this is not the case. He has maintained his right to remain president despite persistent international calls for him to step down. |
Government shutdown would damage fragile California economy (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:29 PM PDT ContributorNetwork - As President Barack Obama continues to battle with congressional Republicans over the next budget deal, many are beginning to wonder what specific impact a government shutdown will have on federally administered services. The good news is that all "essential" personnel operations would continue. That means you need not worry about police, the military, prisons and judicial systems. |
Georgia government workers, military families to bear shutdown burden (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:29 PM PDT ContributorNetwork - Extending the Bush-era tax cuts for those making more than $250,000 a year, past when they were originally supposed to expire, helped cause a huge federal budget shortfall. Now Congress can't agree on which government programs to cut in order to make it up, so it seems that we're headed for a federal government shutdown -- where only "essential" federal government workers are allowed to report for duty. |
Gov't shutdown worries Marylanders (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:29 PM PDT ContributorNetwork - BALTIMORE, Md. -- On Friday, the nation finds out if the metaphorical line in the sand that's made out of money will shut down aspects of the federal government. That simple line separates verbally warring members of Congress more clearly than political ideals, long-standing voting records or even tea. And it's no party for anyone involved. |
